Dinner Church

Image of fork and spoon in orange and purple with the words: gathering around meal + reflecting and sining together + building community + being sent to love and serve. 4th Sundays @ 5pm starting February 25 Dinner Church. Enter at 1050 W. School Street.

It’s dinner. It’s church. The people of LakeView Lutheran Church and Resurrection Lutheran Church are trying this new-to-us way of gathering as church and hope you’ll join us, one time or monthly. Our guiding principals are on this page and we hope to live into them as we try this new thing together. It won’t be a perfect production, but what dinner party ever is?

When Jesus gathered with those first followers, there was bread and drink, reflection and teaching. Each one of them had gifts to offer and were reminded that they were/are a beloved child of God, connected to one another and creation and the cosmos.

Want to help prepare soup? Lead a song or poem? Be involved in any of the preparation? Contact Pastor Kelly and she’ll help find a place where your offerings and our gathering match.

What We Need IS Here

We sing this song from our friends at Music Makes Community.

Perhaps this poem will provide some inspiration as you consider joining us.

What We Need Is Here

By Wendell Berry

Horseback on Sunday morning,
harvest over, we taste persimmon
and wild grape, sharp sweet
of summer’s end. In time’s maze
over fall fields, we name names
that rest on graves. We open
a persimmon seed to find the tree
that stands in promise,
pale, in the seed’s marrow.
Geese appear high over us,
pass, and the sky closes. Abandon,
as in love or sleep, holds
them to their way, clear
in the ancient faith: what we need
is here. And we pray, not
for new earth or heaven, but to be
quiet in heart, and in eye,
clear. What we need is here.

Dinner Church Guiding Principles 2024

Gathering around a meal.

We all need nourishment – for our bodies, our minds, our spirits, and our hearts.

Reflecting & singing together.

We all have something to share and something to learn.

Building Community.

We all are people in relationship and longing for relationship – with neighbor, with self, with God, with creation.

Being sent to love & serve.

We all are welcome and help to create a warm, welcoming space for all (queer-friendly-anti-racist-theologically progressive-all ages-and abilities kind of people.)

Let’s make something together.
